Old Country (Romania)

Back in the Old Country (Romania)  we only have a few living members of the Tanciu family:

  • Mihai Tanciu (born in 1928, deceased in 2013), elder brother of Nicolae who emigrated to Canada. Mihai was a retired electrical engineer and lately still an active HAM radio aficionado (YO3CV), writer of children’s books  and a life-time prolific painter.  Married to Angela (Nuni) (born in 1930, deceased in 2013), a retired high-school history teacher . They lived in Bucharest practically all their adult life. Angela passed away in January 2013, while Mihai passed away in November 2013, each after very short illnesses. RIP Angela and Mihai.

  • Gabriel Tanciu (born in 1953), architect, son and only child of Mihai and Angela. He was also born and lives in Bucharest.

I think that’s about it. At least these are all the people whom I actually know and still remember.

The name Tanciu is not common, so chances are other people with the same last name would be somehow related. There are surely also the odd cousins with different last names, but I don’t know them all, in fact I know very few of them. I’m the limiting factor here. If they appear and I learn of their existence, I will add them.

Back when we (the Canadian contingent) were still in Romania, we were living in Iasi(1963-1971),  in the Moldova province (not to confuse with the Republic of Moldova, despite similarities and ethnic connections). Dad was a surgeon at one of the local teaching hospitals in Iasi, while Mom was working at the Polytechnical Institute and I was a high-school student. I’d just finished grade 9 when we left Romania, ending up in Italy for a few months.

Before Iasi, we lived in Craiova (in the Oltenia province), where I was born and did my first 2 grades of elementary schooling.

To the outside world it may be irrelevant that  Iasi is in Moldova and Craiova is in Oltenia … except for the usual ribbing  natives  of either province get. Kind of like the Newfie jokes that circulate here, in Canada. Must be due to the accent and the outlook on life in general ;)

In Craiova we lived  in the same house as my maternal grandfather, Constantin Scarlete (nicknamed Bibu), a retired lawyer, one time judge and small town mayor and former army officer, retired from the army due to a serious accidental  injury sustained very early in his army career.   I may hopefully get around to tell Bibu‘s  story sometime. Suffice to say he, more so than my own parents, raised me to be who I am today, with all my qualities and flaws.

My paternal grandparents, Tudor and Gheorghita Tanciu, fondly called Maia and Tatae, lived in a small town, Slobozia, not too far from the capital Bucharest, where I remember spending parts of my summer vacations, often at the same time as my older cousin Gabriel. Slobozia’s claim to fame at the time was being a significant rail hub and being close to Amara, a great black mud and salt water lake resort where you couldn’t sink in the lake even if you tried ;) I think when Jesus walked on water it must have really been there, because I’ve done it myself countless times ;)

There’s a bit more family from Mom’s side, which I’ll have to explain later.

Hmmm… it’s hard explaining a genealogical tree without building the  tree…
